30 by 30 Initiative

What is 30 by 30?

30 by 30 is a goal introduced by Engineers Canada to raise the percentage of newly licensed engineers who are women to 30% by the year 2030. Engineers and Geoscientists BC fully supports this goal and has been actively working since 2013 on a number of initiatives to support diversity in the professions.

Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia is committed to both the retention of practising female engineering and geoscience professionals and increasing the participation of women in the professions. In support of this goal, the association’s work plan to date has focused on the recommendations delivered in 2013 by the Women in Engineering and Geoscience Task Force. The task force delivered 18 recommendations and 97% have been actioned.

The 30 by 30 Strategy

To reach the 30 by 30 goal, Engineers and Geoscientists BC Council has endorsed the association’s 30 by 30 strategy and Phase 2—the consultation phase—of the 3-Phase work plan. This phase asks members for feedback on the strategy.

The strategy was developed after the conclusion of Phase 1 of the work plan—research and data collection. This phase included a review of current programs, interviews, surveys, research, and a review of programs and initiatives from across the country.

The strategy aims to encourage and support both the recruitment and retention of women in engineering by:

  1. Leveraging our strengths
  2. Building relationships to maximize collective efforts
  3. Supporting girls and women along the full career path

Members are asked to review and provide feedback on the full strategy as well as our Guide to Action—one pagers which include information on current activities and new potential activities related to each stage of the career path. These activities are the basis from which the tactical plan will be developed to support our strategy.

Feedback from members is intended to help form the completed strategy and creation of an action plan. Once Phase 2 is completed by the end of October 2018, the association will continue into Phase 3, which involves identifying key actions, establishing key goals and achievements, and estimating the necessary resources needed to place the plan into action.
