Mentor of the Year Award Past Recipients

Background

Engineers and Geoscientists BC Mentor of Year Award was created to recognize excellence amongst mentors in the engineering and geoscience community in British Columbia. Outstanding mentors from any of the different disciplines of engineering and geoscience are eligible for this award. Mentorship plays a key role in supporting a successful career in engineering and geoscience. Engineers and Geoscientists BC wishes to acknowledge the importance of mentoring relationships amongst registrants with the Mentor of the Year Award.

Nomination Packages

Please review the Mentor of the Year Award Terms of Reference prior to submitting an award nomination.

The Mentoring Committee will review all nominations, and make a recommendation to Council regarding the recipient of the award. At its discretion, the Mentoring Committee may decide to carry forward nominations from the previous year. At the discretion of the Mentoring Committee, the award may not necessarily be awarded each year.

All correspondence will be conducted between the Mentoring Committee and the nominator on the nomination form.

The Mentoring Committee would prefer that a nomination not be revealed to a candidate before its consideration by Council.

Deadline

Nominations and all supporting documents are accepted until 4:59 PM on Friday, April 9, 2021.

Eligibility

  • P.Eng. (Practising and Non-Practising), P.Geo. (Practising and Non-Practising), P.Eng.,P.Geo.;
  • All nominees must be in good standing;
  • Nominees must be a mentor registered in the Engineers and Geoscientists BC mentoring program and/or Accredited Employer MIT Program;
  • Nominees should have a sustained record of mentoring of at least 6 months;
  • Only a mentee can nominate their own mentor;
  • Prior recipients of the Mentor of the Year Award are not eligible for the award again; and
  • Self-nominations will not be accepted.

Important Notes

  • The online nomination form does not allow you to save your work as you go. It is recommended that you review the online form and work from a word file and then copy your information into the form when you are ready to submit the completed nomination.
  • Incomplete or late nominations will not be considered.
  • Only nominations submitted using this online form will be accepted. Mailed, faxed, or emailed applications will not be accepted.
  • In the case that submission to the selection committee are deemed to be equal in merit, the committee will collect secondary criterion for selection including number of years involved, total number of mentee pairs, previous award nominations, and engagement in other committees. This will be compiled by staff.

SECTION A: CRITERIA

The award recipient will have had a demonstrated continued commitment to mentoring and a significant positive impact on their mentees’ careers. For purpose of this award, mentoring is defined as the process of guiding, supporting, and promoting the training and career development of others. This award targets a mentor’s contribution towards the success of the mentee(s), and not the mentor’s personal career achievements.

SECTION B: NOMINATION QUESTIONS

Please answer the following questions in as much detail as possible. (Please limit each answers to 250 words maximum)

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

Reflect on your mentorship and provide details on how you are in contact (phone, email, or in-person) with your mentor, describe that quality of these interactions in terms of duration, depth and focus, give examples of ways your mentor has shown availability and flexibility in communication and exchanges, provide evidence that your mentor is receptive to your ideas and needs.

Intellectual growth and development

Please describe how your mentor helped you grow as a professional, e.g. variety and quality of topics discussed, examples of joint attendance at technical session or professional development events with your mentor or list examples of invitations he/she has extended to you, list any involvement in shared projects and/or professional collaborations.

Career Development

Please describe how your mentor helped you develop in your career. Explain advice you received and how you have applied this advice to help you be more effective in your position or achieve career progression. Describe how your mentor helped you develop a short and long term career plan.

Professional Advancement

Please describe how your mentor helped you develop as a professional. Explain how your mentor expanded your network by introducing you to other professionals, forums, or committees, guidance your mentor provided on your resume or registration process or assistance with any major career or professional decision.

Advocacy

Please describe how your mentor has promoted the importance and value of the engineering/geoscience industry and/or Engineers and Geoscientists BC.

Positive Role Modelling

Please describe how your mentor has been a positive role model for you.
