Science Games Volunteer Mentor Position (Online)

Science Games 2021

Science Games 2021 is going virtual this year with a focus on collaboration, connection, discovery, and fun! This four–week event has groups of students (grades 1–6) go through interactive weekly challenges with their mentors online through Zoom. Volunteers will have an significant impact this year as they will show their students all the fun and cool aspects of engineering and geoscience, and be a part of their support group that encourages and helps build their confidence and interest in science!

Role of Mentors

  • Guide your team of students through weekly challenges on Zoom and be their point of contact for questions or insight.
  • Be a significant part of their support group that encourages and empowers each student, so they feel confident, comfortable, and connected with the content.
  • Be a creative problem-solver and find ways to connect the content and lesson objectives with respect to the interest level, learning ability, and attention span of your group.
  • Build connections and excitement with your team and get to know them.
  • Provide insight into your role as an engineer/geoscientist (ie. What your typical day is likes, what your industry looks like, why you chose this type of engineering/geoscience, etc.).
  • Be your unique self, and showcase what’s fun and cool about engineering and geoscience.

Time Commitment

There are 3 options available for volunteer mentors:

Option 1: Division 1 Mentor (Grades 1–3)
  • 1 Challenge per Week*
  • 2 Hours per session (4 Sessions total online through Zoom) 
  • Total Time Committment: 8 Hours 
*Weekly Challanges Dates and Times:
  • Saturdays from 10 AM–12 PM
  • March 6, 13, 20, and 27, 2021 

Option 2: Division 2 Mentor (Grades 4–6)
  • 1 Challenge per Week*
  • 2 Hours per session (4 Sessions total online through Zoom)
  • Total Time Committment: 8 Hours
*Weekly Challanges Dates and Times:
  • Saturdays from 1 PM–3 PM
  • March 6, 13, 20, and 27, 2021

Option 3: Mentor for Division 1 and 2 (Grades 1–3 and Grades 4–6)
  • 2 Challenge per Week*
  • 2 Hours per session (8 Sessions total online through Zoom)
  • Total Time Committment: 16 Hours
*Weekly Challanges Dates and Times:
  • Saturdays from 10 AM–3 PM
  • March 6, 13, 20, and 27, 2021

Pre-Event Volunteer Training: 3-4 Hours in February 2021

Science Games volunteers will have an opportunity to participate in a Pre-Event Volunteer training before Science Games to be done over Zoom. At the Pre-Event Volunteer Meeting, you'll have a chance to review all the Science Games activities, learn how to lead each challenge, ask questions from our Activity Leads, and get tips on engaging students online and keeping their attention!
