Resuming Practice Rights

 

About this Category

This category is for professional engineers and professional geoscientists with non-practising status, or former members and licensees, who wish to reinstate their membership or licence with practice rights.

While on non-practising status, a member must commit in writing to Council not to engage in the practice of professional engineering or professional geoscience until released from the commitment by Council in writing:

  • Commit in writing to Council not to engage in the practice of professional engineering or professional geoscience until released from the commitment by Council in writing,
  • Meet all minimum continuing professional development requirements for non-practising status set by the Council,
  • Continue to subscribe to the secondary professional liability insurance program, and
  • Commit that if at any time during the year the member intends to practise professional engineering or professional geoscience, the member will apply for resumption of practising status, will pay the applicable fees set by Council, will comply with any requirements for return to practice, and will not practice professional engineering or professional geoscience until practising status has been granted to the member by Council.

There is no limit to the period of time that a member can be on non-practising status.

Who Can Apply

  • Members with non-practising status
  • Former members (P.Eng. or P.Geo.) who wish to reinstate their membership with practice rights.
  • Former Non-Resident Licensees (P.Eng. or P.Geo.) who wish to reactivate a lapsed licence
  • Former Limited Licensees (Eng.L. or Geo.L.) who wish to reactive a lapsed licence

How to Apply

All non-practising members and former members who do not currently have practice rights with a Canadian jurisdiction are subject to the same proof of competency and return to practice requirements.

 

Documents Required

Category 1

Professional engineers, professional geoscientists, or licensees whose membership or licence has been cancelled for non-payment of current year annual fees and who are seeking expedited reinstatement of their practice rights:

  • An application for resumption of practice rights.
  • Optional letter of appeal to the Registrar explaining why the cancelation of your membership should be reconsidered.
  • Resumption of practice application fee.

Category 2

Professional engineers, professional geoscientists, or licensees whose practice rights have lapsed in British Columbia but who have been maintaining full practising membership or licence with another Canadian provincial or territorial Association/Ordre or a US State Board of Professional Engineer or Geoscientist Registration or Licensure.

A. Former Members in Category 2 whose practice rights have lapsed for one year or less:

  • An application for resumption of practice rights.
  • Resumption of Practice Fee
  • Certified* copy of Canadian Citizenship if not previously submitted

B. Former Members in Category 2 whose practice rights have lapsed for more than one year:

  • An application for resumption of practice rights.
  • Resumption of Practice Fee
  • Certified* copy of Canadian Citizenship if not previously submitted
  • Confirmation of Membership (Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia will contact your indicated provincial/territorial Association(s)/Ordre. During the application process, you will be required to disclose your membership details for each of the Canadian associations/Ordres you are a member with)
    • If you are a member with a US State Board and are not subscribed to the NCEES service, you will need to send a Confirmation Request Form to the state board for them to fill out and send directly back to Engineers and Geoscientists BC.

Category 3

Non-practising professional engineers, professional geoscientists, or licensees whose practice rights have lapsed less than one year and who are not covered by Category 2:
  • An application for resumption of practice rights
  • Resumption of Practice Fee
  • Certified* copy of Canadian Citizenship if not previously submitted

Category 4

Practising professional engineers, professional geoscientists, or licensees whose practice rights have lapsed for more than one year but less than three who are not covered by Category 2:

  • An application for resumption of practice rights
  • Resumption of Practice Fee
  • A letter of explanation as to why you wish to resume your practising status
  • Certified* copy of Canadian Citizenship if not previously submitted
  • Two references** who can attest to your good character and good repute and practice competency
  • Current professional record of your work experience
  • Completion of the Professional Engineering and Geoscience Practice in BC Online Seminar if not previously completed. (Note, this requirement is waived for individuals who have attended the previously offered Law and Ethics Seminar or purchased and declared viewing of the CD set)

Category 5

Professional engineers, professional geoscientists, or licensees whose practice rights have lapsed for over three years and who are not covered by Category 2:

  • An application for resumption of practice rights
  • Resumption of Practice Fee
  • A letter of explanation as to why you wish to resume your practising status
  • Certified* copy of Canadian Citizenship if not previously submitted
  • Two references** that cover the total number of years since membership lapsed and can attest to your good character and good repute and practice competency
  • Professional record of your work experience
  • Completion of the Professional Engineering and Geoscience Practice in BC Online Seminar
  • Application to write the Professional Practice Examination if not written and passed previously
  • Applicants in Category 5 may be required to work under professional supervision for a period of time and on such terms as set by the Council and provide references from the professional supervisor

* To have a copy certified, make a photocopy of your document (citizenship card, birth certificate or current passport) and ask a P.Eng., P.Geo., P.E., or Notary Public to sign and stamp it as a "true copy of the original". Alternatively, you may bring your original document as well as a photocopy of it to our office to have it certified. If you cannot come in person, you can send a third party to bring in your original document and the photocopy to be certified as long as a signed letter is provided authorizing the individual to provide the documentation on your behalf. Please do not mail your original citizenship card, birth certificate, or current passport to Engineers and Geoscientists BC.

Once your documentation and examination/seminar requirements are complete, the length of time to reinstate your practice rights is estimated to be:

When your practice rights resume you will be sent confirmation and information on your Licence and membership ID.
