Role Overview

McElhanney Consulting Surveying Ltd. has an opportunity for a Structural CAD Lead to join our team in Vancouver! This role is ideal for someone who is looking for a challenging opportunity comprising technical leadership and structural drafting skills to be utilized on a wide variety of bridge design projects, including but not limited to highway bridges, transit structures, and long span bridges. In this role, you will have the opportunity to work alongside a team of 20 plus engineers on a wide variety of bridge design projects.


  • Technical leadership for the bridge drafting group.
  • Detailed drafting of steel, concrete, and timber bridges, including for wide variety of bridge projects, including erection engineering and shop drawings.
  • Leading the drafting group in the preparation of engineering plans according to client-specific standards, using primarily AutoCAD, as well as other technical software as needed.
  • Assist junior drafters in the production of engineering plans and tender documents for structural bridge projects.
  • Coordinate with other drafting and engineering team members to ensure schedules, budgets, and quality control standards are achieved.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines both internally and externally.
  • Assisting in improving AutoCAD standards for structural drafting.
  • Provide help with carrying out CAD staff yearly performance reviews.
  • Seek to identify future needs and help grow the drafting group as and when needed.


  • Certificate or diploma in civil engineering technology is an asset.
  • 10 plus years’ experience in structural drafting and design.
  • Registration as an A.Sc.T. or other technical accreditations is an asset.
  • Technical leadership and mentoring abilities related to drafting.
  • Ability to coordinate with engineers and other drafters in the team is essential.
  • Experience with, and ability to interpret multi-jurisdictional CAD standards, and setting up and implementation of appropriate templates is essential.
  • An understanding of highway geometric design is an asset.
  • Experience in Civil 3D/Revit and MicroStation experience is an asset.
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD Software is essential.
  • Excellent attention to detail and drive for excellence.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills are a must.
  • Ability to work without supervision as well as within a busy and close-knit team environment.
