Responsibilities

Responsible for projects during progression from Schematic Design through Construction, including document control, correspondence, project budgets, design, detailing, and field review. May delegate duties to a Project Engineer or EIT. May be Engineer-of-Record for projects and responsible for sealing documents.

Duties – Design:

  • Ensure loading information is reasonable and properly sourced;
  • Understand probable construction techniques to ensure practical construction;
  • Review loading and analysis;
  • Review gravity and lateral load systems and understand code implications; and
  • Review serviceability of structure to ensure acceptable deflection and vibration performance.

Duties – Project:

  • Manage and chair regularly scheduled project meetings;
  • Establish a good relationship with clients and other business relations;
  • Understand broad relationship with client and how that affects the project;
  • Review correspondence with external parties for tone, messaging, and potential liability issues;
  • Ensure production and organization of design calculations and project files;
  • Review project teams work for changes in structural concept;
  • Review project teams work for changes in project scope and potential extras;
  • Liaise with drafting manager on project schedule;
  • Work with other project managers to resolve workload issues and conflicting deadlines;
  • Provide budget hours for workload projections; and
  • Provide invoicing instructions to Accounting department.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • At least 7-10 years of related project management experience;
  • Registered, or eligible for registration, as a professional engineer (P.Eng.), in BC;
  • Capacity for multitasking for multiple/large-scale projects, with the ability to set team priorities;
  • Ability to manage time well, schedule tasks, and estimate timelines for project teams;
  • Thorough knowledge of business English, spelling, punctuation, and grammar;
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills;
  • Understanding of project process and order, including procurement types;
  • Understanding of general construction techniques and materials;
  • Ability to compose letters, memos, and reports;
  • Understanding of statics and dynamics with regard to building design;
  • Ability to understand software results and troubleshoot models quickly;
  • Ability to communicate well with external project teams;
  • Ability to manage the internal project team;
  • Distribute tasks;
  • Enforce deadlines; and
  • Respond to team member issues within the projects.
