Operations Manager

North Salt Spring Waterworks District

North Salt Spring Waterworks District is seeking a new Operations Manager.

Located in the beautiful Southern Gulf Islands, Salt Spring Island is a vibrant, active rural community and a great place to live.

Surrounded by the Salish Sea, the area offers a year-round mild climate where the outdoor enthusiast can enjoy fishing, kayaking, sailing, hiking, soccer, tennis, and golf. Amenities and services include excellent elementary and secondary schools, a hospital, library, renowned arts and culinary options, and a wide range of health and wellness retreats. Greater Victoria and the Cowichan Valley are both just a short ferry ride away.

The mission of the NSSWD is “to provide potable water within the NSSWD boundaries in an efficient and sustainable manner.” This encompasses residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional users or approximately 5,500 people within the District boundaries. The NSSWD also operates six other regional district and improvement district water systems under contract. Reporting to the District Manager, the Operations Manager manages all waterworks operations for that customer base, including water treatment plants, distribution systems, and related infrastructure. The Operations Manager provides advice and support to the District Manager and Board of Trustees on operations, planning, design, engineering, construction, and asset management. Furthermore, the Operations Manager will lead a team of trained and experienced staff; and participate in public and Board of Trustees’ meetings when necessary.

To succeed in this role, you must have a sound understanding of operational requirements in a local government setting. You possess the ability to work in a politically sensitive environment, think innovatively, lead change, and strive for continuous improvement. You have exceptional leadership and people management skills; and are able to work with a high degree of autonomy while recognizing the interconnectedness of your actions and decisions to the District as a whole.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in engineering, engineering technology, water treatment technology or equivalent.
  • Minimum 7 years of directly related experience in waterworks operations.
  • Minimum 4 years proven experience in a supervisory or managerial position.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence and satisfactory Driver’s Abstract and criminal record check.
  • EOCP certification in water treatment and water distribution will be an asset.
