Civil Engineer

As a member of the Gas Engineering team, the Civil Project Engineer will provide design engineering support services primarily focused on Stations projects and Operations support activities for FortisBC.  Projects include preparing civil and structural engineering assessments, feasibility studies, completing detailed design and field engineering activities for Capital Sustainment projects. You will work with a team of engineers, technologists, and external consultants on a wide variety of projects, involving the design of natural gas transmission, distribution, CNG and RNG stations. The scope of this position also includes, but is not limited to civil and structural design activities, the development and maintenance of civil and structural standards, development of Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) studies and completing project estimates and scopes with other team members. This role will require the use of problem-solving skills with the use of a combination of standard procedures and leveraging experience from previous assignments. This will be achieved by working with a team of engineers and professional support staff in a high paced and demanding environment.


  • Completing design activities for new stations and related infrastructure in FortisBC’s transmission and distribution natural gas system;
  • Supporting the engineering process from conceptual to detailed design including design review and sign off with internal stakeholders, preparation of IFC documentation, onsite construction technical support and project records close out;
  • Preparing engineering assessments and FEED studies including economic, feasibility and risk assessments using practical experience and engineering principles; 
  • Preparing and reviewing mechanical construction drawings including material(s) take off, specification, and procurement;
  • Working with the project team members to analyze project costs, schedule and construction resources to all AACE class levels of project definition throughout the project life cycle in order to make recommendations to internal clients as to the preferred alternatives; 
  • Assisting and supervising the work of technologists, designers, drafters, and external consultants;
  • Ensuring all engineering and design activities are in compliance with regulations, codes, standards and guidelines as they apply to the design, environment, safety, regulatory and other stakeholders of new or upgraded facility projects and FortisBC operating practices;
  • Coordinates work with other engineers and various stakeholders to facilitate participation in the development of a project design, validates design with appropriate stakeholders with assistance as required;
  • Provides technical support to system operations, project management and resolves civil engineering issues related to ongoing projects; and
  • Provides structural welding design and technical support for FortisBC and external contractor structural component shop fabrication.


  • Bachelor of science degree in civil or structural engineering;
  • 4-7 years of civil or structural engineering experience in related industry;
  • Registration as a professional engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists BC or immediate eligibility;
  • Qualified as a welding engineer under CSA Standards W47.1 and W59;
  • Valid BC driver’s licence or the ability to obtain is required;
  • Ability to work with multiple stakeholders;
  • Ability to work as part of a large, multi-disciplined team;
  • Demonstrated leadership skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, set priorities and balance short and long term strategies to organize multiple projects;
  • Demonstrated computer skills (Microsoft Office and structural design software);
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and solve complicated problems;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of structural welding, concrete support structures and small structure design;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of engineering principles and practices related to civil/structural design;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of engineering design techniques, tools and principles with emphasis on concrete and structural design;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safe work practices, policies and procedures;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of planning process for short and long term capital plans; and
  • Demonstrated ability to consider constructability and cost effectiveness in design.
