Reporting to the Manager, Engineering and Remediation, the Tailings and Environment Engineer is responsible for oversight of tailings and water retaining structures, reclamation, and closure at Teck Canadian Legacy Properties outside BC and water balance models at sites across Canada. Involvement with facilities outside of Canada from time to time is also possible.

The nature of the work is diversified and will require analytical skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, strong organizational and task prioritization skills, and the flexibility to handle changing priorities and travel across Canada; sometimes with very short notice.

The Tailings and Environment Engineer will lead by example in ensuring that safe and healthy working conditions are maintained, and that workers follow safe work practices and receive adequate training in their specific work tasks to protect their health and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures.
  • Fully understand and embrace Teck’s Tailings and Water Retaining Structures policy, governance framework, and guidance documentation.
  • Fully understand the jurisdictional requirements for Teck’s engineering and reclamation activities relative to tailings and water retaining structures outside of BC.
  • Have a strong understanding of the current engineering and remediation management practices for the tailings facilities within BC so that consistent practices across the rest of the Canadian portfolio can be maintained.
  • Oversee activities at Canadian closed mines outside BC, including technical studies, reclamation and closure, and management of tailings and water retaining structures.
  • Act as Tailings Qualified Person at closed tailings facilities outside BC.
  • Oversee development and maintenance of water and load balance models at various sites across Canada.
  • Coordinate and review work by external consultants.
  • Coordinate internal reviews by Teck’s Tailings Working Group of both external consultant work and Teck documents and plans.
  • Oversee short and long term projects, including supervision of consultants and contractors.
  • Participate in dam safety inspections, dam safety reviews, Independent Tailings Review Board reviews, and Corporate governance reviews.
  • Prepare deliverables for government and Corporate on activities related to tailings and water retaining structures and environmental monitoring (in French and English).
  • Prepare submissions and coordinate both external and internal verification for Teck’s commitments to the Mining Association of Canada’s (MAC) Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) Tailings Protocol.
  • Participate in annual tailings emergency response exercises and risk assessment workshops.
  • Implement recommendations from internal and external geotechnical inspections, reviews, and audits.
  • Act as Teck representative with regulatory agencies outside BC, including meetings with regulators in Quebec conducted in French.
  • Participate in engagement activities with communities of interest.
  • Participate in preparation of annual budgets and ensure cost controls are implemented.
  • Prepare requisitions for proposals, evaluate proposals and bids, and review contracts.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
  • Eligible or registered as a professional engineer in a province in Canada, and open to registering in multiple provinces.
  • A minimum of 5–10 years of progressive industrial experience, including mining, health and safety, project oversight, and tailings management.
  • Fluency in French and English.
  • Working knowledge of water treatment plant operations and collection facilities is an asset.
  • Previous supervisory experience is an asset.
  • Previous familiarity with MAC’S TSM tailings guidance and protocol would be an asset.
  • Understanding of requirements for managing tailings facilities.
  • Experience with closure and reclamation of mine sites.
  • A results-oriented individual who has exceptional organizational, research, planning, writing, and communication skills.
  • Keen to take initiative, act proactively to anticipate needs, and work independently and in a team environment. Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.
  • Self-directed individual who enjoys working outdoors and is willing to travel.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office®, GeoExplorer and GoldSim.
  • A valid driver’s licence.
