What is the Job?

Reporting to the Staff Lawyer, Regulatory Affairs (the “SLRA”), the Enforcement Officer assists in managing complaints from the public and taking proactive steps to ensure compliance with the Engineers and Geoscientists Act in the areas of unauthorized practice and the use of restricted titles. The Enforcement Officer will have the ability to manage simpler files independently. The Enforcement Officer will also perform other tasks at the request of the SLRA and the Director to advance the overall goals of the department and to assist with overflow work from the department.

The job duties of the Enforcement Officer include the following:

  • To monitor new enforcement complaints from the public and open new files;
  • To assist the SLRA in analyzing new complaints, setting out a course of action to ensure compliance with the Engineers and Geoscientists Act in the areas of unauthorized practice and the use of restricted titles;
  • To support the SLRA by taking conduct of simpler files related to allegations of unauthorized practice and the use of restricted titles by gathering necessary evidence and managing communications;
  • To research people and issues that arise during the course of an enforcement file and assist with coordinating external expert reports;
  • To interview witnesses by telephone or in-person, and to make document requests from external sources; and
  • To act in a fair, unbiased and professional manner in the course of all investigations, and to escalate contentious enforcement files to the SLRA.

Who Are We Looking For?

The successful candidate will have a university degree, and may have experience at a regulatory body and/or in a legal environment or have a mix of education and experience that would make the candidate suitable to fulfill the duties of the position. The successful candidate will have 3-5 years of experience including:

  • Experience conducting investigations, preferably in a law firm, legal department, professional regulatory body, or similar organization;
  • Strong research, analytical and project management skills, and knowledge required to successfully manage files;
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work well as a member of a team;
  • Ability to liaise with subject matter experts;
  • Ability to uphold confidentiality and manage sensitive situations;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Products: Word, Outlook, PowerPoint; and
  • Knowledge of engineering or geoscience is an asset but not required.
