What is the Job?

Reporting to the Investigation and Discipline Manager, the Investigator assists the Legislation, Ethics and Compliance Department and the Investigation Committee with the investigation of complaints against engineers and geoscientists by taking conduct of investigation files.

The Investigator has the ability to assimilate large amounts of information and write clear and concise reports on complex matters. The Investigator solves basic policy and regulatory questions that arise during the course of conducting investigations. The Investigator will also perform other tasks at the request of the Investigation and Discipline Manager and the Director, Legislation, Ethics and Compliance.

The job duties of the Investigator include the following:

  • To act in a fair and unbiased manner and conduct a professional investigation;
  • To analyze complaint files and set out a course of action to support the subcommittees of the Investigation Committee during the investigation process;
  • To research issues that arise during the course of an investigation;
  • To interview witnesses by telephone or in-person, and to make document requests from members and licensees subject to investigation, from public bodies and from third parties;
  • To retain and coordinate external expert reports required for investigations;
  • To provide recommendations based on the analysis of evidence;
  • To possibly act as a witness at a discipline inquiry; and
  • To assist with all matter of overflow work from the department.

Who Are We Looking For?

The successful candidate will have a university degree. The Investigator may have experience at a regulatory body and/or in a legal environment or have a mix of education and experience that would make the candidate suitable to fulfill the duties of the position. The successful candidate will have 3–5 years of experience including:

  • Advanced research and analytical skills,
  • Strong project management skills and knowledge to successfully manage complex files,
  • Ability to work well as a member of a team,
  • Familiarity with a professional regulatory environment or the ability to adapt to such an environment,
  • Ability to liaise with subject matter experts on the Investigation Committee and in the community,
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to build working relationships throughout Engineers and Geoscientists BC,
  • Ability to uphold confidentiality and manage sensitive situations,
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Products: Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and
  • Knowledge of engineering or geoscience is an asset but not required.
