Fundamentals of Bulk Materials Handling Seminar. This two day course is an overview of most aspects of the equipment and methods used in bulk materials handling from the pit to the port. The course is designed to give an introduction to the practical engineering aspects of bulk materials handling design, and an awareness of the many types of equipment and their application. The course provides some practical design considerations for engineers and designers, and leads to better outcomes for the industry.
 
This two day course is an overview of most aspects of the equipment and methods used in bulk materials handling from the pit to the port.
 
The importance of understanding bulk materials handling properties is discussed.
 
We will review:
  • types of equipment that is available, why we use various equipment in certain applications, how they function, including tips and experiences
  • design considerations for materials handling systems
  • the available science for design of bulk materials handling systems
  • issues that make for safe, operable and maintainable systems
 
The course is a PowerPoint session, but participants are expected to contribute questions and experiences.
 
Course Objectives
 
The course is designed to give an introduction to the practical engineering aspects of bulk materials handling design, and an awareness of the many types of equipment and their application. The course provides some practical design considerations for engineers and designers, and leads to better outcomes for the industry.
 
This information is not readily available in any learned institution or in texts, yet many of our projects involve the design and construction and operation of materials handling systems that are often 50% or more of the total capital cost.
 
Poor design can lead to poor construction and operation, unsafe works, higher cost of operation, environmental issues and other aspects that can be addressed with some knowledge and research given the right starting point.
 
Target Audience
 
Anyone with an interest in learning about bulk materials handling. Steve has presented to new graduates, engineers and designers with over 30 years’ experience, merchant bankers, equipment suppliers and many others.

Steve Davis, PEng, CEng, CPEng, FIMechE, FIEAust – Technical Director, Materials Handling, WorleyParsons Canada
 
Steve Davis is the Technical Director for Bulk Materials handling with WorleyParsons Resources and Energy in Burnaby.
 
Steve has over 30 years’ experience in the resource industry, having worked in Europe, Africa, Australasia and North and South America. He has specialised in the development of bulk materials handling projects for many materials and many capacities. His experience includes studies and detailed design, construction and operation, failure analysis and upgrades in resources that include coal, iron ore, bauxite, alumina, copper, nickel, gold, diamonds, manganese, potash, oil sands, salt and others.
Steve’s work has involved many aspects of bulk materials handling from pit to port, including In Pit Crushing and Conveying, overland conveyors, in plant conveyors, stockpiling and reclaim, loading and unloading to trains and trucks, and port facilities including shiploading and ship unloading.
 
Steve has presented courses previously in several countries. This course has been presented to over 200 engineers in Canada, Australia and Chile in the last five years. It has been revised and updated since the last presentation.
