Advanced Large-Scale Geothermal Heating/Cooling Systems: Resource, Technology & Economy Seminar. This seminar will train participants on important technological, resource and economical issues related to large-scale geothermal systems and show how these issues can be adequately addressed by combining different applications and technologies to maximize the systems' economical and environmental values.

Energy/HVAC Engineers, Energy Economists/administrators, Energy scholars and senior/graduate students, Energy Regulators, Energy utility managers, Energy policy makers (government, NGOs, Municipalities), Developers/architects

Course Outline
Integrated geothermal systems consist of geothermal direct use and geothermal heat pump resources and technologies used for large-scale heating and cooling applications (heating and cooling of large buildings, malls, airports, campuses, city blocks, greenhouses, etc).

Contrary to small-scale systems which can have a relatively standard design, large-scale geothermal systems are often very complex.  Efficient and sustainable use of a limited ground resource for a large application requires a detailed understanding of the resource and technology and a customized design (to maximize the energy output while minimizing the capital and operating costs).

This course will cover interlinked problems related to resource sustainability, technology options, monitoring/control systems and environmental/economical issues associated with large-scale geothermal heating/cooling projects.

The course will specifically cover topics on:
  • Sustainability, extent and efficiency of geothermal resources (including ground, groundwater and surface waters)
  • Integrated extraction/usage, technologies and heat distribution, heat storage, cascade usage of heat, and integration of heat pump systems with conventional HVAC systems.
  • Design and regulation issues related to economical, environmental factors and energy/CO2 audit.

The course is solution oriented and discusses the anatomy of several challenging and successful real-case projects.


Dr. Mory Ghomshei, P.Eng./P.Geo.

Dr. Ghomshei is an international energy consultant. He has designed integrated and sustainable energy systems in Canada and abroad. He has worked on the World Bank’s environmental guidelines for renewable energy development. He is also an adjunct professor at UBC, where he teaches courses on energy and sustainability. He has also published several papers on energy metrics and sustainability.
