FEM and CFD - Engineering Modeling Methods Seminar. The fundamentals and applications of two engineering computational methods, Finite-Element and Finite-Volume will be explained. Applications of these methods of engineering analysis will be discussed with presentation of examples for solid, fluid and heat transfer cases.
The fundamentals and applications of two engineering computational methods, Finite-Element and Finite-Volume will be explained. Applications of these methods of engineering analysis will be discussed with presentation of examples for solid, fluid and heat transfer cases.
 
The second part of the seminar will focus on solving examples of energy systems using finite-element method. Participants can benefit from this seminar by learning about these methods and their applications for their engineering design and analyses work. References to useful resources, including software packages will be given. Participants are required to bring their own laptop computer to the seminar.
 
The following topics will be covered:
•         Introduction to numerical methods for engineers
•         Mathematical modeling
•         Solutions of models using numerical methods
•         Introduction to Finite Element Method and types, FEA, and FVA
•         Application in energy systems
•         Discussion of available commercial software packages

Dr. Mehrzad Tabatabaian, Ph.D., P.Eng. – BCIT, School of Energy (Program Head-Faculty Mechanical Engineering Department)
 
Dr. Mehrzad Tabatabaian is a Faculty Member- Instructor and Program Head- at the Mechanical Engineering Department, School of Energy at BCIT with several years of teaching experience. In addition to teaching courses in the fields of thermodynamics, energy systems management and modeling he also does research on renewable energy systems and modeling. Dr. Tabatabaian is also the School Research Committee Chair and actively involved in the energy-initiative activities. He has published several papers in various scientific journals and conferences, and also holds several patents in the energy field. Dr. Tabatabaian’s recent focus is on wind and solar power which has resulted in registered and pending patents.
 
Recently, Mehrzad volunteered to help establishing a new division at APEGBC, the Division for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (DEERE).
 
Mehrzad Tabatabaian got his BEng from Sharif University of Technology (1979) in Iran, graduated from McGill University (MEng 1986, PhD 1990) in Montreal, Canada. He has been an active academic, professor, and engineer in leading alternative energy, oil, and gas industries. Mehrzad has also a Leadership Certificate from the University of Alberta, the Green Building Technologies Certification, and holds an APEGBC P.Eng. license and is a member of ASME.
