New Product Development Workshop. Many professional engineers work for companies that aspire to develop, produce, and sell their products in large volume and with high gross margin. Business plans depend on it; investors expect it. The purpose of this Workshop is to help engineers understand how the product development pieces fit together, and how to get the most out of their product development efforts. This will be done by going over the product development (PD) process, detailing the roles of each function, highlighting critical dependencies, and passing on best practices. A planning exercise will be held in order to gain new insights and accelerate learning.

  • Characteristics of successful new products and why some products fail
  • Understanding the triple constraint: scope, cost and schedule.
  • Phases of product development (PD)
  • Organizations and Resources
  • The various functions, what roles they have in each PD phase, and the dependencies between various functions.
  • Planning
  • Best practices
Target Audience
All professional engineers that have a stake in the success of new product development: design engineers, product managers, product development managers, technical team leaders, CTOs, VPs Engineering, test and certification professionals, quality managers, etc.
Eric Guetre, P.Eng.
Eric has worked in product development for 12 years, and has led product development teams for 7 years.  At Nokia, he was product development manager for the N91 and N96 smartphones, which together were produced and sold in the millions.  Eric has a Master's in electrical engineering from Carleton University and a B.Eng. (electrical) from the Royal Military College of Canada.  Right after his B.Eng. from the Royal Military College of Canada, he briefly served in the Air Force in the field of avionics.  He holds a US patent related to cell phone antennas and is certified as a Project Management Professional.  He is currently a Project Engineer at TRIUMF (Canada's national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics).
