Presenter: Stephen LaRoy, P.Eng., graduated from UBC in Engineering Physics. After stints volunteering in Burkina Faso and working at PMC-Sierra, he started at BC Hydro in the Smart Metering Program in 2008. He has been involved in various aspects of this project, including the oversight of the Smart Metering Lab and responsibility for designing backhaul network for meter data using technologies such as WiMAX, public cellular, and satellite. He is current working as a network planning engineer to design and validate BC Hydro’s next generation IP/MPLS network.

BC Hydro is installing a smart metering system around the province and to date over 1.8 million meters have been installed. This presentation is a chance to receive a more technically-focused overview of the program and the high level project architecture, including IT, telecommunications, meters, theft detection and home area networks. The project schedule and anticipated benefits to the customer and the utility will also be presented.
