Presentation Topic #1: “Building a Solid Foundation for the Future” by Vice President John Clague

APEGBC Vice President John Clague, P.Geo., will speak to us and take your questions. His speech is entitled “Building a Solid Foundation for the Future” and will be an update on the APEGBC Council, the 2014-2017 Strategic Plan, and a variety of other APEGBC initiatives.


Presentation Topic #2. “Building the Deh Cho Bridge - A Structural Engineer's Account” by Don Williams

The Deh Cho bridge is a 1km long cable stayed bridge crossing the Mackenzie River near Ft. Providence, NWT. The bridge began construction in 2008 and was opened to traffic in November, 2012. The bridge replaces a ferry/ice bridge system that was the only way to cross the river previously and is located on the main highway to Yellowknife. The presentation will outline the presenters experience over the past six years of construction of the bridge including technical highlights along with the challenges associated with constructing a highly complex structure in a remote and difficult location.

John Clague, P.Geo.
Vice President, APEGBC

Dr. Clague holds a PhD in Geology from the University of British Columbia. He is the Shrum Professor of Science at Simon Fraser University and acts as a consultant for private sector firms and government agencies. Dr. Clague brings over 35 years of background in earth science, working with government and academia and maintaining close ties to private sector engineers and geoscientists. He is a director of the SFU Centre for Natural Hazard Research and author of two popular geological books and a textbook on natural hazards. Dr. Clague was the recipient of APEGBC’s C.J. Westerman Memorial Award in 1999. This is his third term on Council.


Don Williams, P.Eng.
Allnorth Consultants Limited

Don Williams is a senior engineer with Allnorth Consultants Limited. Don's experience is primarily with transportation systems, particularly bridges and specializes in the construction engineering aspects of these types of structures.
