Underwater inspection of man-made structures is vital as they age. In addition, water currents, corrosion, and damage from storms and vessels may impact structure integrity.
Diving inspections are often challenged by high current, deep water, lack of visibility and debris accumulation around the structure. In addition to limiting the diver from completing a thorough inspection, debris build-up around bridge piers is potentially one of the most dangerous conditions the inspection diver faces. It introduces the possibility of entanglement, and even worse, diver entrapment if the debris moves.
Kongsberg Mesotech pioneered the use of scanning sonar for underwater marine engineering applications. Konrad Mech, P.Eng., MBA, PMP, is the Director of Sales and Marketing for Kongsberg Mesotech. He has experience in hull-mounted active sonar handling systems, variable-depth active sonar handling systems, and towed-array passive sonar handling systems for both commercial and military use. Mech’s article “How Hard-wall Expandable Containers Helped Brazil Recover from an Antarctic Disaster” was the cover story of APEGBC’s May/June 2013 issue of Innovation Magazine.
Mark Atherton is the Business Development Manager for Kongsberg Mesotech. Prior to joining Mesotech, Atherton managed the Offshore Survey Division of CAN-DIVE Services Ltd., an internationally affiliated, commercial diving company in North Vancouver, British Columbia. At Kongsberg Mesotech Ltd., he is involved in all aspects of sonar system development, testing, applications and operations including deep-water pipeline route surveys, cable-lay operations and underwater structural surveys. Atherton is a frequent guest lecturer at universities, colleges, international marine and security conferences, and private and governmental in-house training seminars.
