APEGBC Sea To Sky Branch Dinner & Technical Presentation: "High-Resolution Sonar Systems for Efficient Underwater Inspection"

Underwater inspection of man-made structures is vital as they age. In addition, water currents, corrosion, and damage from storms and vessels may impact structure integrity.

Diving inspections are often challenged by high current, deep water, lack of visibility and debris accumulation around the structure. In addition to limiting the diver from completing a thorough inspection, debris build-up around bridge piers is potentially one of the most dangerous conditions the inspection diver faces. It introduces the possibility of entanglement, and even worse, diver entrapment if the debris moves.

Kongsberg Mesotech pioneered the use of scanning sonar for underwater marine engineering applications. Mesotech is a world leader in the development of products used for visualization of underwater structures (bridges, docks, piers, dams etc.) and using sonar to support a multitude of underwater construction applications.

This presentation will cover the following applications for sonar in underwater inspection:
• Infrastructure inspections (e.g. culverts, bridge piers and abutments).
• Quantification of identified issues (area, volume, geo-referenced).
• Pre- and post- construction surveys.
• Guiding divers/contractors in real-time.
• Clearing areas for diver safety and security.
• Search and recovery.

Attendees will take home the following points:
• How to optimize operational expenses for underwater inspections using sonar.
• How to conduct safe, cost effective inspections in low visibility and high current.
• How to obtain auditable and accurate results for asset management.
• How sonar enhances safety and efficacy of diver inspections.

5:30 - 6:15 pm   Registration. Social networking. Cash bar.
6:15 - 6:30 pm   Announcements. Introductions.
6:30 - 7:30 pm   Buffet dinner.
7:30 - 9:00 pm   Speakers’ Presentations.
9:00 – 9:15 pm  Questions and answers. Closure.

Konrad Mech, P.Eng., MBA, PMP, is the Director of Sales and Marketing for Kongsberg Mesotech. He has experience in hull-mounted active sonar handling systems, variable-depth active sonar handling systems, and towed-array passive sonar handling systems for both commercial and military use. Mech’s article “How Hard-wall Expandable Containers Helped Brazil Recover from an Antarctic Disaster” was the cover story of APEGBC’s May/June 2013 issue of Innovation Magazine.

Mark Atherton is the Business Development Manager for Kongsberg Mesotech. Prior to joining Mesotech, Atherton managed the Offshore Survey Division of CAN-DIVE Services Ltd., an internationally affiliated, commercial diving company in North Vancouver, British Columbia. At Kongsberg Mesotech Ltd., he is involved in all aspects of sonar system development, testing, applications and operations including deep-water pipeline route surveys, cable-lay operations and underwater structural surveys. Atherton is a frequent guest lecturer at universities, colleges, international marine and security conferences, and private and governmental in-house training seminars.

Kongsberg Mesotech Ltd. is a global leader in the underwater acoustic industry, based in Port Coquitlam, BC. Characterized by exceptional engineering capabilities, the Company supplies a worldwide customer base with products for search and recovery, marine engineering, security and surveillance, fisheries and various other underwater applications. Kongsberg Mesotech is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kongsberg Gruppen, an international, knowledge-based group of 7,500 employees that supplies high-technology systems and solutions to customers in the oil and gas industry, the merchant marine, and the defence and aerospace industries.
