APEGBC Vancouver Branch Breakfast Seminar. Topic: "Innovative Solutions for Low Cost Composting".

Compost matters in achieving sustainable organic waste management goals. It is now possible to pull the largest chunk of your waste stream (organics) out of the landfill and make a valuable end product for your community. It is possible to operate a compost facility that will not produce negative odours in the surrounding community. But it needs some “easy to do” steps to be followed in design and operations. This presentation will discuss these “easy to do” steps.

This presentation will also highlight how every municipality can start a composting pilot program for as little as $45/tonne. Pilot projects for areas like the Comox Valley Regional District will be highlighted where it cost less to process organics on-site than it did to haul and process at the closest licensed facility. Net Zero Waste Inc. has demonstrated similar success in the area from the Kootenays to Salt Spring Island. A successful program is now growing in Comox and the municipality is saving significant amount of money in the process. Opportunities for downstream improvements from community gardens to waste heat energy capture for greenhouses will also be discussed in light of NZW’s own experience.
