This seminar explains the key factors regarding application and operation of control systems for hydro generators. Specifically, the seminar will focus on stability, frequency control (governor and automatic generation control), voltage control (exciter/AVR and joint var control), and coordination of protection with control. Drawing on the extensive experience of the presenters, the seminar is reinforced with practical examples of real world problems and solutions.

Learning Objectives
 
After this seminar, the attendees will understand the key factors (including grid code requirements) in application and setting of the control systems as follows:
  • Theory of speed control
    • Specification and application of Hydro Turbine Governors.
    • Design and commissioning of Power and Frequency control systems; parallel operation of generators, gate droop, power droop, automatic generation control (AGC), grid and isolated frequency regulation,
  • Theory of voltage control
    • Specification and application of exciters and Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVR)
    • Design and commissioning of Voltage and Reactive Power control systems; reactive drop and droop compensation, Joint Var Control (JVC), Voltage Stability
    • Synchronous generators and power system stability enhancing techniques
    • Coordination of control systems and protection systems.
 
Prerequisites
 
Basic knowledge of three phase electric power systems and control systems. Basic knowledge of three phase large generators. Familiarity with major equipment used in generation and transmission of electrical energy. Possessing of an Electrical technologist or engineering degree is preferred.
 
Target Audience
 
Electrical and Mechanical Engineers who are involved in the planning, design, commissioning, maintenance and operation of hydroelectric power generation systems will benefit from participation in this seminar.
 
Presenters
 
Charlie F. Henville, P.Eng. – Principal, Henville Consulting Inc.
 
Charlie Henville is a specialist in electric power system protection. After a thirty year career with BC Hydro, he retired in 2005 from the position of principal engineer. He now runs his own consulting company in power system protection. Charlie is well experienced in training engineers in power systems. He is adjunct faculty at the University of Wisconsin and the University of BC, and has presented training courses to APEGBC and working engineers world wide. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and Past Chair of the IEEE Power System Relaying Committee.
 
David B. Apps, P.Eng. – Principal Engineer, Generation Engineering, BC Hydro
 
David Apps is a Principal Engineer, Protection, Control & Telecommunications with B.C. Hydro. Dave has approximately 32 years experience with BC Hydro, primarily in Generator Protection and Control design and technical management. His experience includes many redevelopment and upgrade projects as well as protection, exciter and governor designs, modifications and replacements. Dave also has experience in telecommunications/SCADA design at both BC Hydro and Motorola. Other areas of experience include reliability methods, root cause analysis and structured decision making. He has presented many courses and technical presentations on governors, exciters, protection and joint voltage controllers. Dave is a senior member of IEEE and chairs or participates in several IEEE PES standards working groups. In addition, Dave has published technical papers for IEEE, CEA, Hydrovision and Waterpower.
 
Ravi P. Mutukutti-Arachchige, P.Eng. – Engineering Team Lead, Protection & Control Design, Generation Engineering, BC Hydro
 
Ravi Mutukutti is with BC Hydro Generation Engineering. He worked in different departments within BC Hydro and is currently the Engineering Team Lead for P&C design department. His department is responsible for designing protection and control systems for the BC Hydro generating station fleet. His special interests are hydro turbine governors, exciters and generator control systems. He carried out number of power system modeling and stability studies, governor retrofits, power system stabilizer and excitation system designs.
 
He has over 25 years of experience in the hydro power generation. Prior to BC Hydro, he worked in Yukon Energy, ABB Generation, and Ceylon Electricity Board. He has been an active member of IEEE Excitation Systems Committee since 2008. He has published number of papers in excitation systems, governing systems and HVDC systems.
 
He obtained his Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Windsor, Ontario. He also holds degrees in Bachelors of Engineering and Masters of Engineering from University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka.  He is a registered Professional Engineer in Australia, Sri Lanka, Ontario, Yukon and British Columbia.
