Your job as a manager is to help team members find their own way - not your way - to accomplish tasks, and to set and achieve objectives and goals; to inspire and build confidence while facilitating change. Whether climbing the corporate ladder or turning adequate into excellence, a coach helps instill positive change in career planning and workplace relationships.

Too often discussions between a manager and an employee are about performance rather than aspirations, as well as how they can be engaged. These discussions will build trust faster and more reliably than discussions on performance or ability. Coaching your employees is about bringing about change that is fruitful for the coachee, the employee, and helping them move forward with an action plan.
 
Examine the 5 steps to follow in establishing a coaching conversation:
  1. Establish the Focus for the conversation and/or for the task
  2. Discover the possibilities – how to prepare for a coaching session, how to get started, paraphrasing and probing
  3. Plan the action – guide the development of an action plan with goals and time lines
  4. Remove barriers – identifying resources, and getting around the gremlins
  5. Recapping your progress – checking in on how you are doing, where to go next
  • The importance of listening
  • Body language accounts for 55% of the communicated message, learn how to read it and use it
    • Participate in a typical coaching session
    • Questions, questions, questions – it’s all about the probing which comes from being a great listener
