The Seismic Retrofit Guidelines ( SRG) and the Seismic Performance Analyzer are tools which have been developed under the Ministry of Education's Seismic Mitigation Program so there is a standardized methodology applied to the seismic assessment and upgrade of BC school buildings using a performance based approach.

The structural engineering community in BC has worked together in utilizing these tools in an effective and consistent fashion. In addition to developing these resources for the structural engineering aspect of school seismic upgrades the BC Ministry of Education accepted APEGBC’s recommendation to develop a common engineering approach for addressing the impact liquefaction can have on school seismic upgrades.   
 
As a result the Ministry has worked with APEGBC and the UBC Earthquake Engineering Research Facility so that the SRG also includes a standardized approach for providing safe and cost-effective solutions for mitigating the risks posed by liquefaction (Volume 11 of SRG 3rd Edition : Liquefaction Guidelines-Geotechnical and Structural).  Similar to the manner in which the structural engineering community is utilizing  the SRG as a consistent and  common engineering approach for the performance based seismic upgrade of BC school buildings it is the intent that  geotechnical engineers utilize the liquefaction guidelines which form part of the SRG as a consistent and  common engineering approach for providing safe and cost-effective solutions for mitigating the risks posed by liquefaction in school seismic upgrades.
 
In 2011 the BC Ministry of Education informed school districts in writing  that the SRG is to be applied in the seismic upgrade of schools  and that the Ministry accepted liability for the use of the SRG which upon completion of SRG  3rd Edition will include Volume 11 Liquefaction Guidelines-Geotechnical and Structural. This seminar will discuss the methodologies being provided in Volume 11 Liquefaction Guidelines-Geotechnical and Structural.  Finally, the workshop will also provide an overview of the appropriate use of site response analysis in determining the cyclic shear stresses for liquefaction assessments.
