APEGBC East Kootenay Tours in Kimberley

Underground Mining Railway and SunMine Solar Photovoltaic Generating Facility

Note: Please come equipped with sturdy walking gear as the terrain at the SunMine and portions of the underground mine tour are rocky and cobbly.
The APEGBC West Kootenay Branch would like to invite East Kootenay members to tour the Kimberley Underground Mining Railway and the Kimberley SunMine solar photovoltaic generating facility. For more information, please see below.

A chartered bus will be leaving from Castlegar and meeting East Kootenay members at the Kimberley SunMine to begin the walking tour. 

The Underground Mining Railway is located underneath the Rocky Mountain Trench in the city of Kimberley and it leads to the Sullivan Mine. The train tour goes through the Mark Creek valley, and then takes you underground towards the mine. The walking tour will visit the Sullivan Mine Powerhouse for a guided tour of the huge compresors and generators that powered the mine.

The Kimberley SunMine project, which was constructed by the City of Kimberley, has an installed capacity of 1 MW and went into commerical operation on June 22, 2015. 

Schedule: 
1:00 PM (MST) - Meet at the Kimberley SunMine, begin walking tour
2:00 PM (MST) - Depart Kimberley SunMine
2:15 PM (MST) - Arrive at Kimberley Platzl, rest period for lunch
3:30 PM (MST) - Depart from Kimberley Platzl
3:45 PM (MST) - Arrive at the Kimberley Underground Mining Railway station
5:00 PM (MST) - Tour finishes

Notes: 
  • This trip is conditional upon getting the desired number of registrations, please register by September 24, 2015. 
  • Food and beverages are not provided. There will be an opportunity in Kimberley to purchase lunch.
