“The Future of Spill Response on the West Coast”
Presenter: Michael Lowry, Manager, Communications; Western Canada Marine Response Corp.

Spill preparedness and response capability has been the subject of significant scrutiny on the west coast of Canada over the last number of years.  This interest has been triggered in part by the announcements and subsequent review of several projects that would result in the expansion of oil handling facilities and increased shipping traffic along the coast of British Columbia.  In addition, the federal government has undertaken a significant review of the national spill response regime that will ultimately result in a significant shift in how spill preparedness and response occurs in Canada.

Michael Lowry will discuss how Western Canada Response Corporation (WCMRC) is preparing to meet the challenges of providing world class marine spill response within the changing risk and regulatory environment.  WCMRC is the Response Organization certified to respond to marine oil spills along British Columbia’s 27,000 km of coastline.  First established in 1976 as an industry co-op, it became Canada’s first certified response organization in 1995 under the current federal spill response regime.
