Join us in an informative, fun-filled event aimed at promoting the science, and particularly engineering and geoscience professions in our community and to the youth. Let’s help the youth find their way to better serving the community by way of the APEGBC Richmond/Delta Branch's annual “Engineering and Geoscience Fair with Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition".

This event is part of National Engineering and Geoscience Month (NEGM); an annual celebration of engineering and geoscience across Canada. The goal of this event is to promote the awareness of the engineering and geoscience professions, showcase career choices and the many ways in which engineering and geoscience relate to our everyday life.

To achieve this goal, the Richmond/ Delta Branch of APEGBC has worked with academic, industry, and community organizations to bring this full-day, fun-filled event in the heart of Richmond - Lansdowne Mall. Rain or shine, we will be there. Come out with your family and friends and enjoy your day:
  • Watch the Community Science Show of the Science World at 11:30am
  • Browse through the engineering students' projects
  • Visit the information booths of engineering companies
  • Learn about the works of Engineering division of the City of Richmond
  • Participate in contests and competitions
  • Test your Popsicle Stick Bridge (read the details below), and
  • Learn more and win prizes.
 Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition:

The competition is designed for three age groups:
  • Grade 10 and under (1:00pm to 2:00pm),
  • Grade 11 and 12 (2:00pm to 3:00pm), and
  • Post-secondary students and others (3:00pm to 4:00pm).
To participate in this competition, working in a team or individually, you must contact Fardin Barekat (email: [email protected]; Phone: 778-833-2356) to obtain the instructions and materials (popsicle sticks, glue, and instructions and rules). Only the bridges that are constructed with the materials obtained from Fardin and according the rules and instructions will be allowed to participate in the competition.

Your bridge will be tested using a hydraulic jack coupled with load cells to destruction. The bridge that can carry the highest load would be chosen as the winner of the competition. The winners of each age group will be awarded with cash prizes.
