This workshop-styled seminar aims to help you learn turbulent flow modeling fundamentals as well as hands-on experience with a computational software package through solving practical problem examples.

In many industries, there is a growing and pressing need for up-to-date skills on turbulent flow modeling. If you are interested in expanding your flow simulation skills beyond that for laminar flows and wondered how to use the best turbulent models available for your projects, then this seminar is for you.
 
This workshop-styled seminar aims to help you learn turbulent flow modeling fundamentals as well as hands-on experience with a computational software package through solving practical problem examples. Engineers involved in designing parts, processes, and complex systems could benefit from this seminar. Participants are allowed to bring along their own problem to work on during the hands-on session of the seminar.
 
Major topics may include following:
  • Turbulent flow fundamentals and characteristics.
  • Turbulent flows types, common in industry and practice.
  • RANS turbulent models.
  • Introduction to COMSOL® 5 and its Application Builder.
  • Available RANS models in COMSOL and application (covers 7 models).
  • Simulation examples with detailed instructions for building turbulent models.
  • ‘How-to’ techniques for verification and validation of modelling results.

Dr. Mehrzad Tabatabaian, P.Eng. – Faculty, Mechanical Engineering, School of Energy, BCIT
 
Dr. Mehrzad Tabatabaian is a Faculty Member- Instructor and Program Head- at the Mechanical Engineering Department, School of Energy at BCIT with several years of teaching experience. In addition to teaching courses in the fields of thermodynamics, energy systems management he also does research on renewable energy systems and modeling. Dr. Tabatabaian is also School of Energy Research Committee Chair and actively involved in the energy-initiative activities. He has published a couple of textbooks and several papers in various scientific journals and conferences, and also holds several patents in the energy field. Dr. Tabatabaian’s recent work on wind power has resulted in registered two patents, in addition to his previously registered patents.
 
Mehrzad volunteered to help establishing a new division at APEGBC, Division for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (DEERE).
 
Mehrzad offers several PD seminars for the APEGBC members on the subjects of wind power, solar power, renewable energy, and Finite-Element modeling method.
 
Mehrzad Tabatabaian got his BEng from Sharif University of Technology, graduated from McGill University (MEng and PhD). He has been an active academic, professor, and engineer in leading alternative energy, oil, and gas industries. Mehrzad has also a Leadership Certificate from the University of Alberta, and holds an APEGBC P.Eng. license, and is active member of ASME.
