Parking lots pavements are constructed to provide a safe and durable riding surface for the travelling public. Some may be constructed using a flexible pavement (asphalt); others rigid pavement (concrete). Which types are appropriate for each application? What are the functional requirements for rigid vs. flexible pavement? How can each be constructed and maintained in a cost effective manner? Pavement construction is very expensive and once the pavement is built, what is important to ensure that we are getting our money's worth. How do I determine when I need to "fix" something? What is involved? What are the costs?

Purpose and Background 

Pavement design is primarily focused on municipal and provincial highway agencies.  Commercial parking areas can represent a major asset investment.  They are usually the last thing built on a commercial property and are not given significant thought until they begin to fail.  Maintenance is few and far between and yet, having a basic understanding of “issues” can lead to good maintenance and rehabilitation practices to protect this costly investments.   

Primary Discussion Topics/Webinar Outline

This webinar begins with a series of common failures of commercial parking area pavements.  The mechanism of the failures is discussed along with design principals and construction techniques to prevent these failures.  The course then steps through pavement design, specification, construction, maintenance and rehabilitation techniques to improve the performance of the pavements.

  • Understand key components and factors necessary for the cost effective design of flexible and rigid pavements.
  • Be able to identify design and construction features that may negatively impact the performance of pavements.
  • Assist in developing specifications to ensure the performance of pavements.

  • Understanding maintenance and rehabilitation needs and techniques.

David Hein, P.Eng.
Mr. Hein is a principal pavement engineer with Applied Research Associates (ARA).  ARA is a science and engineering firm specializing in practical solutions to everyday problems.  Mr. Hein has been involved in the design and construction of pavements ranging from parking areas to major highways and airport runways.  He is the past chair of the World Road Association Pavements Committee and has completed training courses for over 10,000 participants across North America.
