This short course should be of interest to geotechnical engineers, structural engineers, and civil engineers who wish to have a better understanding of the current state-of-the-art with respect to the analysis and design of shallow and deep foundations. All key concepts and terminology will be explained and emphasis will be placed on the practical application of the information provided.


This course is a comprehensive foundation engineering course dealing with shallow foundations, deep foundations, retaining structures, and excavations. Major emphasis will be on the analytical methods and the problem solving aspects as related to shallow and deep foundations. This course provides the participants with an opportunity to apply the design procedures to a real life" challenging foundation design projects.


The main objective of this course is to equip the participants with the needed tools to select the best foundation solution for each particular project. After completing the course participants should be able to design shallow and deep foundations and supervise their construction. The course philosophy is to provide the participants with the information they need to design foundations at the state of the art.

Target Audience

Structural, civil and geotechnical engineers, consulting engineers, technicians and technologists, public works and construction department employees of federal, provincial and municipal governments and engineers responsible for large industrial, commercial or institutional facilities who must deal with different types of foundations, and foundation construction contractors.

Special Features

The three-day course consists of a series of lectures and workshops. Worked examples with numerical reference reinforce the lecture content. Case studies which illustrate the full range of problems are a feature of the course. There are workshops conducted under instructor guidance on bearing capacity, shallow and deep foundation design, settlement analysis, and a workshop for design examples.

Upon Completion of the Course, Participants Will Be Able To:

  • Judge when shallow foundations should be considered
  • Recognize the failure modes of shallow foundations
  • Determine the bearing capacity of shallow foundations on soils and rocks

  • Find the primary consolidation settlement of shallow foundations on cohesive and non-cohesive soils

Dr. Hany El Naggar, P.Eng., M. CSCE, M.ASCE, M.ACI
Associate Professor of Geotechnical Engineering ,​ Dalhousie University

Hany El Naggar, Ph.D., P.Eng., M. CSCE,  M.ASCE, M.ACI is an Associate Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at Dalhousie University with more than 18 years of experience in civil construction, geotechnical and structural engineering and research in Canada and overseas. He has participated in several structural and geotechnical investigations, and is experienced in analysis and design of foundations and soil-structure interaction of buried infrastructures. He has developed a simplified technique to account for the group Effect in pile dynamics; and closed form solutions for the moments and thrusts in jointed and un-jointed composite lining systems, designed several foundation systems ranging from machine foundations subjected to dynamic loads to raft foundations for underground structure, as well as several tunnels and underground structures. Hany has several publications in refereed journals and conferences. He serves as a reviewer for several geotechnical journals including the Canadian Geotechnical Journal, Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering and the Soil Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering Journal. He is the recipient of the 2005-2006 Outstanding Teaching Award from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Western. Prof. El Naggar won the 2006 L. G. Soderman Award, the 2005 R.M. Quigley Award, and the 2004 Milos Novak Memorial Award.

Prof. El Naggar is the current chair of the Buried Structures Committee, CSCE. Also, he is the chair of the New Brunswick section of the Canadian Geotechnical Society. He is the past Vice President for Engineering at the Centre for Research & Consultancy, ALHOSN University, UAE, and the past President of the ACI-UAE Chapter. He has given several workshops and short courses on various geotechnical engineering topics including Foundation Design, Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering and Buried Infrastructures Design in Canada and overseas and they are very well received by practitioners.
