Asphalt concrete surfaced pavement represent more than 95 percent of all hard surfaced pavements in Canada. While asphalt concrete is a widely used product, the poor performance of asphalt concrete pavements is not unusual. While some potential issues reside with the design of the pavements, the majority are replaced to the production, transportation and placement of the material. This course covers all aspects of asphalt concrete material use and finishes with the good, the bad and the ugly project experiences.

This course begins with an overview of the basic functions of asphalt concrete pavements and includes the following primary modules:
  1. Construction project management
  2. Aggregates
  3. Binder selection
  4. Mix design
  5. Asphalt production and delivery
  6. Asphalt mixture placement
  7. Asphalt compaction
  8. Joints
  9. Quality assurance and lessons learned
  10. Links of design and construction to preformance
The course is designed for all levels of municipal involvement in the management, delivery and maintenance of municipal sidewalks and recreational trails including asset management, capital construction, inspection and testing staff, operations and maintenance, consultant and contractor staff.

Who Should Attend

  • Municipal engineering and technical staff involved in the construction and maintenance of sidewalks and recreational trails.
  • Consultants and contractors involved in the design and construction of sidewalks and recreational trails.
  • Asset management and operations staff.
