Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) are becoming a standard for the AC motor controllers. When used they save energy and protect our environment. This presentation will address the details of the internals of the VFD. The session will outline how a VFD shall be selected based on the application and will also address how VFD saves energy even if the motor speed is not varied. Various problems associated with the use of VFDs will be discussed.

Seminar Description

Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) are becoming a standard for the AC motor controllers. When used they save energy and protect our environment. This presentation will address the details of the internals of the VFD. The session will outline how a VFD shall be selected based on the application and will also address how VFD saves energy even if the motor speed is not varied. Various problems associated with the use of VFDs will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

Participants will understand the:

  • Internals of the VFDs
  • Application of the VFD
  • Selection of the VFD
  • Problems associated with the use of VFDs

Participants will be introduced to the following topics:

  • Speed control of AC/DC motors and terminology
  • Speed control of Squirrel Cage motors with VFD
  • Detailed description of VFD
  • Hands on with working VFD and Squirrel Cage motor

Target Audience

Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and technologists to get a clear understanding of the selection, specifying, use and the maintenance of the VFDs.

Presenter

Harnam Trehin, P.Eng.
SPAR Power Technologies Inc.

Harnam Trehin is a Graduate of Concordia University, Montreal, Que with Master of Electrical Engineering.

For the last 30 years, Mr. Trehin held various positions in the application design and development of power electronics products for industrial applications such as DC drives, AC drives, Rectifiers, electrical prolusion systems and excitation systems (with and without power system stabilizers) for synchronous motors and generators (with brushes and brushless) for industrial applications around the world.

Mr. Trehin has conducted in depth training courses for the application and maintenance of these products around the world.
