Dr. Peter Williams, IBM's Chief Technology Officer of Big Green Innovations, will present an overview of smart cities: where did the idea come from, what does it mean today, what are its limitations and where is it headed?

He will make particular reference to three preoccupations in Vancouver - traffic management, smart buildings and disaster resilience, and provide examples of these from cities around the world. His talk will draw on his own direct experience as well as materials he has assembled from many sources for the class he teaches at Stanford on Smarter Cities and Communities.
