Please come equipped with sturdy walking gear as the terrain at the SunMine and portions of the underground mine tour are rocky and cobbly.
The West and East Kootenay Branches of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists (APEGBC) are partnering to organize a one-day field trip to Kimberley to visit the Kimberley underground mine and the SunMine solar photovoltaic generating facility. For more information, please see below.
This trip will be leaving Nelson, BC on a chartered bus and will be driving to visit the Underground Mining Railway and the SunMine in Kimberley to meet up with members from the East Kootenay Branch.
The Underground Mining Railway is located underneath the Rocky Mountain Trench in the city of Kimberley and it leads to the Sullivan Mine. The train tour goes through the Mark Creek valley, and then takes you underground towards the mine. The walking tour will visit the Sullivan Mine Powerhouse for a guided tour of the huge compressors and generators that powered the mine.
The Kimberley SunMine project, which was constructed by the City of Kimberley, has an installed capacity of 1 MW and went into commercial operation on June 22, 2015.
