Insurance is pivotal in understanding how to mitigate risk. This seminar will help attendees understand professional liability insurance and provide examples of claims against engineers and geoscientists, contracts, and risk transfer.

After the seminar, students and industry members are invited to a networking session.

The seminar will take place in the Telus Theatre at BCIT (SE6 223). After the presentation, we will proceed to Habitat Pub (formerly Professor Mugs). Please ensure you select both the seminar and the networking session if you will be attending both.


Mitigating Risk Through Insurance

Join Craig Wallace, P.Eng., from SHK Law Corporation who will discuss:

  • Stats about claims against engineering and geoscience firms.
  • Claims examples against engineers and technicians. Understand how they happened and learn how to avoid being in this situation.
  • Contracts and contract wording issues including indemnity language. One of the most pressing issues engineering firms deal with is onerous contract language, learn how to identify and modify inappropriate contract language.
  • Personal liability and how the corporate policy will respond to protect the individual.
  • Risk Transfer and how to quantify and manage.
  • Solid advice about how to avoid and manage claims.


Craig Wallace, P.Eng.
Principal, SHK Law Corporation

Craig Wallace is a principal of SHK with over 30 years of experience in construction, insurance, and commercial litigation. He frequently acts as counsel for design professionals,construction managers, owners, and contractors in all manner of construction disputes. His background as a Professional Engineer enables him to provide knowledgeable and cost-effective representation to these parties in complex technical

Craig also frequently represents insurers in coverage disputes. His broad commercial litigation practice includes cases involving bonding, builders liens, product liability, directors’ and officers’ liability and shareholder disputes.

Professional Activities and Memberships

Craig is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (APEGBC), as well as the Law Societies of British Columbia and Alberta. He is a regular lecturer on the legal aspects of construction and the design professions, and lectures in APEGBC courses and continuing
education seminars.

Craig is an adjunct professor at UBC and lectures in its Civil Engineering Department, teaching courses on law for engineers and geoscientists.

After the presentation, we will proceed to Habitat Pub for an informal networking session. Complimentary appetizers will be provided. Food and beverages can be ordered from the pub's menu. Please note that the venue is 19+ and guests may be required to show ID.
