This seminar provides guidance to engineering professionals who need to address the susceptibility and robustness of electronic circuits and systems to ElectroStatic Discharges (ESD). An engineering professional will be able to tune the implementation of electronic circuits and systems to improve their ESD immunity after attending this seminar.

Seminar Description

Hidden static charges can accumulate in many places with the potential to cause damage to our systems. In North America, billions of dollars of damage are created every year by unwanted electrostatic discharges. In this seminar, a survey of ElectroStatic Discharge (ESD) causes and preventative measures is presented. The seminar also provides a review of ESD standards for electronic equipment. After attending this course, engineering professionals will understand the problems associated with ESD, and be able to generate systems which are robust with respect to ESD events.

Learning Objectives

This seminar focuses on the ESD phenomenon, which is on one of the most difficult aspects of electromagnetic compatibility. It provides an electronic presentation with the attendees being provided a hard copy of all slides with additional notes. A testing demonstration using an ESD testing gun and table will be performed.

The following topics are addressed:

  • The ESD problem and ESD-induced failures.
  • The ESD stress model.
  • Protection against ESD.
  • PCB design for increased robustness against ESD.
  • Instruments and testing techniques which are robust to ESD.
  • The basics of ESD testing gun use.
  • Standards and certification.

Target Audience

The intended audience is electrical and computer engineers working with electronics, embedded systems, computers, and instrumentation systems and measurement systems. The goal of this seminar is to provide guidance to the engineering professional who needs to address general ESD susceptibility and/or robustness problems. It is assumed that the attendee has basic engineering knowledge but no prior exposure to ESD is required.
