Engineers and Geoscientists BC has partnered up with BC Housing in conducting a whole building air leakage testing of the Engineers and Geoscientists BC office building located at 200-4010, Regent St, Burnaby, BC.

RDH Building Science Inc. (RDH) recently authored the Illustrated Guide – Achieving Airtight Buildings, which will soon be published by BC Housing. This guide, along with associated training sessions and materials, is intended to be an industry resource with respect to designing, building, and testing airtight buildings. A part of the contract RDH has with BC Housing includes a live-demonstration test which will be videotaped and available as a resource for the building industry professionals and trades. This event will feature pre-demonstration talks regarding the BC’s upcoming Airtightness Testing Requirements under the BC Energy Step Code, City of Vancouver’s Airtightness Testing Requirements, and an introduction to large building air-tightness testing by RDH. It is expected that representatives from BC Housing, BC Building and Safety Standards Branch, City of Vancouver, and BC Energy Step Code Council will be present. The event is intended for building professionals from Engineers and Geoscientists BC, the Architectural Institute of BC, the building industry stakeholders and others that have a vested interest in understanding these evolving requirements.

The live demonstration test will include the following:

  • Sharing the experience and knowledge of the test protocol and requirements for preparing the building, HVAC operation, penetration sealing, etc.,
  • Demonstrating an Air Leakage Test (in accordance with the April 6, 2017 BC Energy Step Code following the ASTM E 779-10 test method and at a building pressurization of + 75 Pa and – 75 Pa.), and
  • Demonstrating a limited qualitative investigation of the building enclosure using both infrared thermography and smoke testing.
Light refreshments will be provided.

Lorne Ricketts, P.Eng., Associate, Building Science Engineer

Lorne Ricketts is an Associate and Building Science Engineer with RDH Building Science Inc. Lorne specializes in new construction, investigation, and research work with typical projects including designing building enclosure systems, hygrothermal and thermal analysis, and testing and monitoring of building performance. Lorne is an accomplished presenter having spoken at numerous conference and industry events in Metro Vancouver and across North America, and he recently oversaw the production of the Illustrated Guide to Achieving Airtight Buildings published by BC Housing.
