This seminar covers all key aspects of solar photovoltaic (PV) projects. In short, a PV system transforms solar irradiance into electricity that can be either sold to the grid or consumed locally. With rapidly decreasing costs, solar is the fastest growing energy technology in the world. Today, the solar industry in the US employs more people than in coal and gas.

This course offers the fundamentals of PV solar with the objective to understand how to implement a successful solar project in BC.

Seminar Description

This course will provide the knowledge required to design, engineer and build solar photovoltaic projects.

Topics include:
  • Solar resource assessment and mapping.
  • Type of installations: ground-mounted and rooftop.
  • Layout design and shading.
  • State-of-the-art available technologies (PV, inverters, mounting, trackers, eBOS).
  • Equipment and system efficiency.
  • Energy modeling and software.
  • Energy purchase agreement (EPA, Net Metering).
  • Grid interconnection.
  • Maintenance.
  • Financial analysis and statistics.

Learning Objectives

In this seminar, you will learn:
  • How photovoltaic works.
  • How to calculate energy production and losses of a PV system.
  • What are the most current technologies.
  • How to improve system efficiency.
  • How to improve quality and reduce risks.
  • What are the most recent pricing trends.
  • How to calculate financial returns.

Target Audience

Anyone interested in developing solar energy projects.

Mr. Michel de Spot, P.Eng.

Michel is the co-founder, current president, and CEO of the EcoSmart Foundation, an organization that helps to implement green practices and clean technologies with a focus on solar energy.

He is a past-president of the Sustainability Committee of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC, a LEED accredited professional, a member of DEERE executive committee, and the co-chair of the Clean Energy BC (CEBC) solar committee.

Michel has extensive experience in solar energy and was the main driver behind ‘SunMine’, the first large-scale solar PV plant in BC. SunMine won numerous awards including APEGBC’s Sustainability Award and the prestigious ‘Engineers Canada Award for outstanding Engineering project.’
