Presentation Details

This talk is not intended to be a manual for pressure piping design. It is an overview of problems and things to look for when adding new piping to existing piping systems and a list of a few common, repeated problems seen by the author.

The major effort in analyzing new pipe systems added to existing is in dealing with the existing piping. In all cases the existing piping must be modelled along with the new and the location of the new branch connection is critical. In many cases the existing piping must be re-supported.

Typical problems seen in the design process  are,  inadequate specification of design vs operating pressure, small branch pipes off large pipes with not enough flexibility, branch pipes next to elbows, inadequate specification of complex pipe supports. These problems will be illustrated with actual cases studies and mitigation measures shown.

The intent of this talk is to raise awareness of piping system flexibility, or lack of it.

About the Speaker

John Stephens, P.Eng., has 36 years of experience in the design and management of heavy industrial projects including zinc pressure leaching, lead smelting, bulk vitrification, ammonia production, and sulphur dioxide recovery. His expertise includes pressure vessel design and repair, piping stress analysis and design, and engineering management.

Branch Annual General Meeting
