In reimagining the Centre with transparency, creating distant views and connection to both the landscape and urban Ottawa, the new architectural design by Diamond Schmitt Architects brings the artistic energy of creation to the forefront so it can be seen by the public and create a dynamic crossroads for gathering throughout the day. The renewed NAC will have a much more public face for events, education, performance, and creation outside the traditional venues of the theatre spaces.
Fast + Epp’s project manager, William Loasby, will present the drivers behind this project and its structural design, revealing the fascinating contrast between the architectural and structural forms of the original concrete building and its modern expansion. He will discuss the thinking and concepts leading to the development of an innovative pre-fabricated, hybrid wood/steel structure with a 15m tall glazed façade, as well as the upgrading of the original building to accept the new expansion.
