Please join us for a breakfast seminar on the topic of "Canmore Debris Floods of 2013 - What Have We Learned" presented by Matthias Jakob, P.Geo.
While no one died in the Bow Valley, the effects of the June 2013 400-year return period rainstorm were unprecedented in human history and caught most residents and regulators by surprise. This talk describes the detailed forensic, hazard, and risk assessments that were carried out after the events and explains some of the mitigation measures that are presently being contemplated or constructed.
6:30 AM – 7:00 AM: Registration and Networking
7:00 AM: Breakfast Served (buffet format)
7:30 AM – 8:45 AM: Featured Presentation by Dr. Matthias Jakob, P.Geo.
9:00 AM: Closing
Dr. Matthias Jakob, P.Geo.
Matthias Jakob is a geoscientist with BGC Engineering Inc. where he has been working for the last 15 years. As a recognized global leader in steep creek hazard and risk assessments, he led the forensic and detailed hazard and risk assessments in the upper Bow River valley following the June 2013 debris floods and debris flows that led to tens of millions of dollars in damage.
During the 2 year investigation, his firm furthered the science of steep creek risk assessments, wrote risk assessment guidelines for the government of Alberta, and completed a comprehensive fan prioritization and risk assessment for the entire mountainous part of Alberta. In 2016, he received the CJ Westerman Award from APEGBC for his engagement in public safety through volunteer work and for his numerous scientific publications.
