Organic rich soils, primarily folisols, have been implicated in a number of coastal BC forestry road construction accidents. As part of the Engineers and Geoscientists in the Resource Sector Division webinar series, Hardy Bartle, P.Eng., will be presenting examples of such accidents, reviewing organic rich soils known and inferred geotechnical characteristics, and opportunities to avoid similar incidents in the future.

Speaker

Hardy Bartle, P.Eng.

Hardy Bartle is a BC-registered geological engineer. He is currently an employee of the BC Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development, Engineering Branch, Nanaimo. He has a lifelong interest in BC slope stability issues.

Hardy was first exposed to organic rich soils as a slope stability hazard as an undergraduate student at UBC in 1985. His first professional encounter with these soils, in a coastal BC forestry road construction accident, was 20 years ago in the mid coast of British Columbia near Rivers Inlet.
