This seminar provides the essential basics to design pre-stressed and post-tensioned concrete structures. After this seminar, the attendee will understand the advantages of using pre-stressed and post-tensioned concrete structures to reduce construction time and provide quality-assured members. The pre-stressing technique reduces the building weight, which reduces the lateral loads caused by earthquakes.

The efficiency of the design depends on the engineer's understanding of the pre-stressing concept as applied to the common concrete elements. Design drawings and construction project pictures will be presented, as well as some practical examples.

After attending the course, you will be able to:

  • Develop effective strands/tendon paths to the member for pre-stressed/post-tensioned members.
  • Use the fundamentals of pre-stressed theory in the design of members.
  • Calculate the creep and shrinkage effects on the pre-stressing forces.
  • Estimate the losses in the tendons and their effect on the design.
  • Calculate the pre-stressing forces and strands areas, and
  • Design simple beams (not continuous) with (or without) additional reinforcing steel bars.

Course Outline

  • Pre-stressing and post-tensioning theory and process
  • Materials and tendon profiles
  • Analysis of sections under flexure
  • Design examples
  • Shear effect of pre-stressing forces
  • Calculation of losses
  • Project examples and drawings

  • Construction engineers
  • Fabricators and manufacturers of structural systems
  • Municipal building officials
  • Field inspectors
