Exchanges between groundwater and surface water occur in the hyporheic zone, which is a dynamic environment in streams and rivers. The need to sample and evaluate porewater and sediment in this dynamic environment is relevant for water resource projects across disciplines that include a conceptual site model incorporating groundwater-surface water interactions. Streams and rivers are challenging environments to sample due to factors such as the mixed sediments, the coarse materials, accessibility, and fast flowing water. This webinar will provide examples of porewater and sediment sampling techniques successfully employed in streams and rivers, and discuss some of the challenges in implementing field programs in these environments.
