Panelists

Michael Blackman, P.Eng., FEC

Regional Manager/Associate, Read Jones Christoffersen Ltd.

Michael Blackman is Regional Manager of RJC Engineers’ Kelowna office. A graduate of UBC’s civil engineering program, Michael began his career in engineering with Allnorth Engineering in Prince George. He has been with RJC Engineers since 2001, and moved to Kelowna in the fall of 2015 to open the local office. RJC Engineers practices structural engineering, building science, structural restoration and parking planning from 11 offices across Canada.

Arlo Johnson, P.Eng.

Facilities Manager, BC Tree Fruits Cooperative

Arlo is a proud mechanical engineering graduate from UBC’s Okanagan Campus (2013). He endured 4 years of university shoved into the portables behind the gym before his final year in the EME building. As a former coop student, he understands the fear, doubt, and crisis that overcome most engineering students throughout their programs and is excited to share his story. Since relocating back to the Okanagan last August, he has made it a priority to be involved with Engineers and Geoscientists BC and UBC’s Okanagan Campus, and he can often be seen at most student and industry nights.

Arlo became a professional engineer on Valentine's Day 2017. Although he is a mechanical engineer, his focus has been in project and construction management across many disciplines. Arlo’s career has developed primarily in the independent power producer industry, where he worked as part of project, construction, and maintenance teams in a variety of different roles. Now, he manages facilities and infrastructure for over one million square feet of buildings spanning 100 acres throughout the Okanagan for BC Tree Fruits Cooperative. BC Tree Fruits Cooperative is a local company owned by over 450 grower families. The company grows, stores, packs, and sells tree fruits including apples, cherries, pears, and peaches.

Nicole Kohnert, P.Eng., FEC

Manager Regional Engineering Services, Regional District of North Okanagan

Nicole Kohnert is an Engineers Canada Fellow and a Professional Environmental Engineer at the Regional District of North Okanagan. She worked as a draftsperson for 6 years then received her B.A.Sc. in Bio-Resource Engineering from UBC in 1991 and her diploma in local government management from UVic in 2009. After starting her engineering career with the Ministry of Environment in Nanaimo and then several years in consulting in Vancouver, she accepted an invitation to work for Metro Vancouver. After 5 years, when an ideal growth position came up in the North Okanagan, Nicole jumped at the chance to return to the BC Interior to be close to family and long-time friends. Now with more than 30 years under her belt, she is looking forward to working casually in her field and travelling the world. An important part of who Nicole is involves giving back to her community and her profession. She received Engineers and Geoscientists BC's Professional Service Award in 2007. In the summer and autumn months you can find Nicole relaxing at her cabin on Adams Lake, canoeing with her dog Jessie, and cooking quality local food.
