The Catalyst Crofton Pulp and Paper Mill has a capacity of 675,000 metric tonnes of pulp and paper and directly employs over 600 people. The mill utilizes primary residual fibre from local sawmills while producing product that competes globally.

The plant uses carbon-neutral wood waste and internally generated by-products as primary fuels, with renewable sources, providing 90% of all energy used in the process. Since 1990 ther have been substantial reductions in water, energy and outputs which has resulted in 37% reduction in water use, 70% reduction in greenhouse gases and 93% reduction in air particulates.

About the Speaker

Harold Norlund, the Vice President and General Manger of the Crofton mill will highlight the sustainable initiatives undertaken by Catalyst Paper while producing a competitive product on the global market. The presentation will review they efforts by Catalyst to continuously lighten the mill’s environmental footprint using local and international environmental and energy management initiatives.

Harold has been a member of Engineers and Geoscientists BC since 1981. He has continually promoted professional certification and has aided the numerous co-op and permanent employment of engineers. Today, the Crofton mill counts 26 members or 20% of the division’s salaried positions, who are registered with Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
