Watershed changes caused by urban development present challenges for planners and engineers who must deal with stormwater planning, design, and watercourse drainage within society's expectations and government regulations. This seminar provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of methods that can be employed to describe watershed hydrology and the infrastructure required to mitigate the impacts imposed upon streams in an urban environment.

Seminar Objectives

Urban watershed management for stormwater management requires the mitigation of the impacts of urban development. The planning and design processes are becoming increasingly complex while demanding the use of advanced engineering application of the latest scientific knowledge. This seminar will explore advanced topics of concern in the planning and design of modern stormwater management systems in urban areas.

After participating in this course, you will be able to:

  • Consider technical issues in design related to planning and environmental impact of development in urban watersheds.
  • Enhance protection of property from flood damage and reduce pollution at a lower cost.
  • Participate in public consultation meetings with confidence, and
  • Employ design methodologies learned in the course on your next project.

Prerequisites

This seminar will build upon the participant’s knowledge of stormwater management. Sample calculations with the application of frequency analysis of streamflow records, and QUALHYMO require the participant to bring a laptop computer with Excel and Environment Canada Data Explorer installed. The installation and user documentation for the Environment Canada Data Explorer can be downloaded from the website: www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/water-overview/quantity/monitoring/survey/data-products-services/explorer.html.

Please note that the app requires the user also install the ancillary program as supplied in the installation software. The file AccessRuntime.exe system is from Microsoft and allows the user to extract information from Environment Canada water survey database.

Unique Features of the Course

The course will provide detailed information on the standards of practice and their limitations along with alternative state-of-the-art methodologies that can lead to more accurate application of scientific principles by engineers.

Target Audience

Consulting engineers, water resource planners, engineers employed by local, provincial, or federal government agencies. The information presented will be valuable to those undertake watershed plans or are in a position to review and approve watershed plans.

Instructor

Mr. Dumont's technical experience has been in the fields of civil engineering and water resources. His experience extends over 40 years in all phases of design and construction. Projects have included: municipal infrastructure, mitigation of urban impacts to the environment, hydrologic and hydraulic investigations, water quality assessment, land development, and construction.

Jim has been providing training seminars on stormwater management in BC for Engineers and Geoscientists BC since 2006 and for across Canada EPIC Technologies since 2010.
