It was 30 years ago, on December 6, 1989, when 13 young women engineering students and a female administrator were killed in Montreal, for no other reason except for their gender. As an engineering community, Women in Engineering and Geoscience Division is initiating a minute of silence to observe this 30th anniversary.
We ask all workplaces who employ Professional Engineers to consider a short workplace event, where everyone gathers to stand for a minute of silence at 11:00 AM to honour those who were killed, and to take the opportunity to discuss diversity and gender equality in the workplace.
At the least, talk to a few colleagues, if they remember hearing the news, to share memories on how this event has affected you. For those who are too young to remember, discuss with them your own experience, so that we do not forget.
