The Old Fort landslide occurred on September 30, 2018. A local state of emergency was called as the slow-moving landslide cut off the only road into the town and forced the evacuation of an entire community of nearly 200 residents.

Tim Smith, P.Geo., was part of a small team of engineering geologists and geotechnical engineers who were first on the ground to assess and monitor the landslide. LiDAR was flown on a daily basis as the ongoing hazards persisted for weeks. The team worked with the Peace River Regional District, provincial government, BC Hydro, and Pacific Northern Gas to protect the residents and local assets.
