Rising sea levels and more extreme storms create increasing hazards like flooding and erosion for seaside communities. As seas continue to rise, the City of Campbell River is one of many coastal municipalities in British Columbia preparing to deal with increased flooding now, and in the future, as we adapt to our changing environment.

The Province of BC advises communities to plan for one metre of sea level rise by the year 2100, and two metres by 2200. With so much of Campbell River situated close to the ocean, as well as low lying (like the downtown core), how should we respond to these impending changes?

Come and enjoy an engaging and informative presentation where we will explore the science behind sea level rise, how this will impact Campbell River, and some potential solutions to mitigate this change.

About the Speaker

As the City’s long range planning supervisor, Chris is responsible for major policy projects and drafting plans, strategies and bylaws. Chris is currently project managing key long range planning projects including sea level rise planning.
Notably, Chris was one of the lead staff who developed the award-winning Refresh Downtown plan, completed in early 2017. This plan won a silver award from the Planning Institute of BC, recognized for its focus on infrastructure, great urban design, animating the downtown, and being an implementation tool that has already been incorporated in the City’s 10-year capital planning.
Chris is particularly adept at understanding legal issues, and with his Masters Degree in Physics, is a “go-to” resource from colleagues looking for a technical and/or scientific perspective on issues.
