Engineers and Geoscientists BC's Council has given its Climate Change Advisory Group the mandate to coordinate the development of a Climate Change Action Plan for the association. What is an appropriate engineering and geoscience response to our changing climate? How should climate change be reflected in the association's statutory responsibility to manage quality in the engineering and geoscience professions? This panel discussion offers information about and an opportunity to help shape the development of the Climate Change Action Plan.

Participate in this panel event sponsored by the Sustainability Committee with support from the Vancouver Branch on the professions' response to climate change and network with industry leading professionals on the subject.

A survey of Engineers and Geoscientists BC members on climate change awareness conducted in 2017 indicated that a significant proportion of members thought it both urgent and important to act on climate change adaptation and mitigation. There is increasing awareness that members, through their professional practice, can take measures to demonstrate reasonable consideration of climate change and extreme weather event factors, and through their work contribute to lowered environmental impact in their projects.

Subsequently, a member motion was passed at the 2018 Annual Conference and AGM, resolving “That council consider undertaking and putting the necessary resources into the development of a comprehensive Climate Change Action Plan that will provide direction on the roles and duties of Engineers and Geoscientists BC's members in addressing this issue”.

Following this resolution, Council delegated the responsibility to develop a Climate Change Action Plan for the association to the Climate Change Advisory Group (CCAG). The CCAG established a steering committee of members from the CCAG and Sustainability Committee to initiate the preliminary work leading to the development of a long-range climate change action plan through the development of a discussion paper and an engagement plan.

This panel session will have presentations from the Climate Change Advisory Group members who have coordinated this work and the consultants engaged in the development of the discussion paper and engagement plan.

The presentation will provide an opportunity for attendees to discuss challenges and opportunities related to climate change, and share professional knowledge and experience. Feedback obtained from this panel event will be considered in the development of the Climate Change Action Plan.

Mr. Nelson Lee, P.Eng., the Chair of the association’s Sustainability Committee, and a member of the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Division, will moderate this special event.
