Event Description

New to the 2021 Science Games are two “Meet an Expert” Sessions during the month of March. These sessions will provide those that attend the opportunity to meet industry professionals in different disciplines of engineering and geoscience. Presenters will talk about what they do as an engineer or geoscientist and will include a Q&A period. The intended audience is for elementary students and attendance is open to everyone.

Event Presenter(s)

Travis Nguyen, P.Eng., Field Services Engineer
Wanda Miller, P.Geo., P.Ag., Geoscientist/Agrologist

About the Event

During our first Meet an Expert Session, it will be divided into two parts during the 1-hour webinar. Join us to meet 2 experts and discover what they do as part of their daily jobs. We hope to see you there!

Part 1

Can We Sort It? Sensor-Based Sorting Technology

Presented by Travis Nguyen, P.Eng., Field Services Engineer

Travis’ presentation will focus on how sorting has made it more efficient for grocery stores to receive produce without the sight of rotten or unripe vegetables/fruits. It has allowed the recycling industry to sort paper, plastics, and metals to help minimize our garbage being sent to the landfills. In mining, sorting has created an alternative to sort ore from waste rock to minimize a mine's impact on the environment.

Part 2

Geohazards, Soils, and Bears—Yes, Bears—Oh My!

Presented by Wanda Miller, P.Geo., P.Ag., Geoscientist/Agrologist

Wanda’s presentation will be about her role as a professional geoscientist and professional agrologist, the technology and desktop ‘tools’ that are used to analyze our landscape, adventures with her fieldwork, and what it is like working with multidisciplinary teams in the environmental and engineering industries. Her topics will cover terrain mapping, geohazards, and soil reclamation, and the why and how she got to where she is, what she enjoys about her career and where she sees her field of study moving to in the future.

Intended Audience

This session is intended for elementary students.

Presenters

Travis Nguyen, P.Eng.

Field Services Engineer

Travis graduated from UBC Mining and Mineral Processing Engineering and has worked in the mining industry since 2010. He has worked mostly within the Canadian diamond industry and has since transitioned into working with sorting equipment within recycling and mining. He also volunteered for several years with Engineers and Geoscientists BC for the Vancouver Branch.

Wanda Miller, P.Geo., P.Ag.

Geoscientist/Agrologist

Wanda is a professional geoscientist and professional agrologist working with environmental and engineering consulting companies for over 19 years. She specializes in terrain mapping/geohazards and soils reclamation for natural and renewable resource projects in mining, oil and gas, power, transportation, and agricultural industries to name a few. Wanda’s experience and focus are on analyzing the natural landscape and how we can impact and protect it while working under provincial and federal policies working with regulators, clients, and the local and Indigenous Communities. Her projects are focused throughout BC and Alberta, however she also works and has worked on projects in the Yukon and Northwest Territories, Newfoundland, Chile, Peru and parts of Africa. Wanda is also a mentor with Engineers and Geoscientists of BC and the British Columbia Institute of Agrologists (BCIA) and enjoys learning something new every day!
